Secrets To Cleaning Your Floors

There are many kinds of disinfecting and floor cleaning products available at all supermarkets and hardware stores. They range in effectiveness, price, and level of toxicity. However, what many chemical manufacturing companies do not tell consumers is that some of the most effective products available for cleaning floors are simple everyday items available in most homes.

Clean Water

There are many situations where clean water is the best solution for cleaning floors. This may seem like an oversimplification; however, pure, clean water is perfect for cleaning hard tile, ceramic, and many natural stone floors. Some cleaning products available on the market can leave streaks on the surface of tile floors, while others can cause chemical damage to some natural stone floors, causing them to permanently stain.

In most cases, it would be better to clean hard surface floors with hot to lukewarm water, and mop the surface regularly. Since moisture does not pose a problem to a properly installed hard surface floor, they can then be left to dry naturally. However, it is important to understand that certain types of floors can be damaged by standing water. This includes hardwoods, cork, carpet, laminates, and some linoleum installations.

Vinegar

Vinegar is an excellent flooring disinfectant, which can be used to clean a variety of flooring surfaces including laminates, stone, brick, tiles, and resilient flooring. Since the smell of vinegar can be quite strong, it should be diluted in a mixture of about a gallon of water to one cup of vinegar. However, a more concentrated mixture can be used to tackle more stubborn stains, including carpet stains.

Rubbing Alcohol

Mixed with water, rubbing alcohol can be a good cleaning agent for resilient flooring and hard tile. In a pinch, it can be used as a spot stain remover. However, rubbing alcohol has a distinct scent, which can be offensive to certain people.

Translucent Dishwashing Detergent

The very same soapy suds people use to clean their plates can also be used to clean floors. A tiny amount of this detergent mixed in a cup of water creates a very effective floor cleaning solution. However, it is important to use translucent soap as the dyes in colored dishwashing detergents can stain certain types of surfaces.

Olive Oil For Hardwood Floors

Olive oil can be applied to hardwood flooring to enhance its shimmering sheen. One should mix a half a cup of this slick, silky substance into a gallon of warm water and apply it to the flooring with smooth, even strokes of the mop.

  1. Olive oil for hardware floors? I’ve never heard of this before! I usually wash mine with Murphy’s Oil Soap but I am going to give olive oil a try…I love a natural solution, as long as it works!
